Lesson Plan Two: Representaional Portrait

Rationale:

During this lesson, students will discover how to proportionally divide the human head so that realistic rendering is achievable.

As an introductory exercise for future studio assignments, students will create five blind contour drawings of their peers and create one wire sculpture from a blind contour drawing of their choosing. Blind contour drawings allow students to connect the senses, sight and touch, by drawing the outline of the subject without looking at the paper. This allows students to build their observational skills by drawing realistically instead of by memory.

Objectives:
  1. Drawing from observation and using ebony pencils, soft pastels, and grey drawing paper, students will create a representational portrait of one fellow student. (H.6.1)

  2. As students create their representational portraits, students will demonstrate skill in rendering: proportion, emphasis, and texture. (H.7.2)

  3. Using ebony pencils and 12”x12” Manila paper, students will draw five blind contour drawings of five different students. (H.6.1)

  4. Using 18 gauge galvanized steel soft annealed stovepipe wire and plyers, students will construct a blind contour wire sculpture. (H.7.3)

After participating in the activities and completing the lesson, the students will be able to:

  • realistically render a portrait with 80% accuracy

Standards:

H.6.1 PROFICIENT: Demonstrate skill in perception from real life (not photographs or flat imagery) to present convincing, accurately rendered objects or subject matter.ADVANCED: Demonstrate skill in perception from real life (not photographs or flat imagery) to present convincing representation of objects or subject matter and demonstrate personal style.

H.7.2 PROFICIENT: Create works of art that use specific principles to solve visual problems. ADVANCED: Create works that use specific elements, principles, and functions to solve problems and communicate ideas.

H.7.3 PROFICIENT: Create artworks that demonstrate skill and understanding of different media, processes, and techniques. ADVANCED: Begin, define, and solve challenging visual problems, demonstrating skill and indepth understanding of media and processes.
